As practitioners of life cultivation, we learn and practice deep breathing, or the tuna technique. In practicing the tuna technique, we learn the proper way to do deep breathing.
Now deep breathing involves the exhale and inhale of air, and the circulation of air and vital-energy between breaths, which is called Qi. In our practice, we classify the combined air and vital-energy into three forms, namely the superficial-energy, the nutrient-energy, and the true-energy. .
In our practice of the tuna technique, we actually learn how to control the three forms of energy to benefit our physical health and our mental state.
We learn the tuna technique in stages. The first stage will involve superficial-energy. The second stage will involve nutrient-energy. The third stage will involve true-energy. Now we will go into the practice of each stage and see how it will benefit us in the long run.
As we have mentioned before, the proper way to learn and practice a technique is to do it this way.
- Read the instructions, understand them, memorize them.
- Visualize the instructions in your mind. If you have forgotten them, go back to read the instructions again.
- Visualize the instructions into video clips.
- Run the video clips over your mind until you are very familiar with them.
- Now you have learned and you can start to practice. You practice from the eyes in your mind, not your physical eyes.

Stage One. Superficial-energy Practice
As beginners of life cultivation, we will practice the control of superficial-energy. What is superficial-energy?
In herbal medicine, it is also called the floating yang-energy because its nature is yang and it is floating around. It is also called the mind-energy because we can control it with our mind. It is also called the wei-energy, as in protection because it is our protective level of energy. Now we will learn to control the superficial-energy since we can control it with our mind.
Why is it called superficial-energy? Because it travels through the epidermis of the human body. It can be expressed outside the human body surface, and the scientific community also calls it the human body glow.
Since superficial-energy can be expressed through the human skin as light, so we ask, how many kinds of light are there? According to some studies, there are more than sixty kinds of light. A killer will carry a light, and an angry person will also carry a light, but the lights are of different colors.
This kind of superficial-energy is semi-innate, partly derived from the nutrients in our foods, partly inherited from our parents, and it is also the source of energy used in physical labor work. This is the kind of vital-energy that we can practice now.
For example, if you are engaged in arm-wrestling, you will prepare for it by bringing your energy to your arm, so that your arm will be strengthened and stiff like a rod, instead of flappy. You can also increase your superficial-energy level by engaging in weight lifting, or hitting the sandbag. You may also do it by practicing many forms of martial arts.
The superficial-energy does not follow the human blood vessels and tissue fluids. Instead, it flows in the dermis layer of the skin. It also flows in the muscles, then it becomes the source of energy when we perform physical labor work.
Superficial-energy has a major feature, that is, it can be directed by human thoughts, and can be intentional. At the beginning, our intention can only be the intention of our conscious mind, as opposed to our spiritual will. Thus, in the beginning of our practice, it is a form of a defensive-energy, or protective-energy.
Now let us go into the practice itself.
01 Relax your body, and further relax your body, to the limit of emptiness, calmness and steadfastness.
02 Imagine that your body is growing bigger, little by little, without forcing it. Your head, chest, waist, and limbs are getting longer, and your shoulders and body are getting wider. Your body rises like a piece of bread dole with space inside, so that you can feel that your inner energy is flowing inside. It gradually tightens on its own with your muscles like one. You are like a whole rubber man now. When you loosen it tightens, and superficial-energy is now flowing inside. You do not try to forget. You do not try to help.
03 When you feel that the superficial-energy fails to flow, you give it a little help such as shaking, turning, and swinging the appropriate body parts. When you are doing this, you should hold your breath, and the whole body will be ventilated. You will feel very comfortable, and fatigue is relieved.
04 Thus the superficial-energy is an essence-energy, a kidney-energy, a nutrient-energy, a defense-energy, and a semi innate-energy. It is a form of vital-energy that you can manipulate with your mind. Have fun with your practice.
