As we past the age of fifty, most of our organs start to deteriorate. Thus we should start to change our habits so that we use each organ most efficiently. Thus we should know which organ will perform at its peak so that we can take advantage of it. This saves us time and energy and will prolong the useful life span of each organ.
As practitioners of life cultivation for holistic wellness, following the advice of traditional herbal medicine, our practice can be summarized in just a dozen or so words.
Regulate your foods and drinks. Regulate your living styles. Harmonize in numbers. Do not overwork.
As you can see, the central theme is for us to live a balanced lifestyle. What exactly is a balanced life?
We do not have to talk about life cultivation with thousands of words. With just a dozen words, the maintenance of our internal organs, our body constitution, our energy flow, and our mental state are well summarized. It is plain and simple, but it is easier said than done.
Thus, for most of us, the great way of holistic wellness in traditional herbal medicine is more like the moon in the well, the flower in the mirror. You can see them, but they are illusionary.
It is not because we do not know or understand. It is just that we do not want to practice it. Thus, when you go through our website, if you just read and enjoy it like a mystery novel, it will do you no good. You might as well spend time with your computer games.
If you are serious, you should practice to preserve your own health. You may practice it by reading the programs presented here. For example, there are programs about stomach health and preservation. You may read it, understand it, and then practice it. You will end up with a healthy stomach and digestive system. If you cannot do it alone, like so many people, you can get a mentor who will work with you.
Do not delay it. Your health is in your own hands.
Modern medicine points out that adolescents should sleep for no less than eight hours, and adults and the elderly should also sleep for seven to eight hours. How do we come up with this amount of sleep? It is a condition for living in the fast-paced and efficiency-seeking characteristics of modern life, and is generally accepted by people. We bet ancient people slept more. They slept from dusk to dawn.
But even so, a considerable number of people are not guaranteed seven hours of sleep per day, and thus enter a sub-health state, and the chances of depression, heart disease, etc. are greatly increased.
Health preservation in traditional herbal medicine advocates that lifestyles should be regulated. It is an easy task, but it has stumped many heroes.
Naturally, we do not want to make judgments on the working environment and living habits of people in this modern society. During the day, the work pressure is high. At night, night-life liberates us.
Furthermore, is it wrong to have a rich and good taste? Do we even have a choice? Is there a way out?
As the saying goes:
People can’t help themselves in the great ganghood.
It is easier said than done to live the life advocated by Zhuangzi (also known as Zhuangzhou) or Laozi (aka Li Er). At this point, it is inevitable for life cultivation practitioners like us to sigh deeply. The way of health preservation in traditional herbal medicine is actually an extremely extravagant concept.
Furthermore, as the saying goes:
If the mind is disturbed, all illnesses will arise, but if the mind is calm, all illnesses will disappear.
If we have no unreasonable desires, no covetousness, and no vanity, then righteousness will be at ease, and true energy will follow. Putting aside the purity of life, and talking about the way of health preservation in traditional herbal medicine, isn’t it putting the cart before the horse and making people laugh?
In the final analysis, the way of health preservation in traditional herbal medicine is a process of self-cultivation and self-control. Life and death are nothing but a cycle of reincarnation. Health preservers are not obsessed with life, but should be emotionally detached from death.
02 The Great Way of life cultivation
The theory of traditional herbal medicine is the theory of the correspondence between heaven and man. It puts man on the earth and the universe to observe how climate, environment, and pathogenic substances will affect the human body. It teaches people how to live longer, so there are regulated times for each activity such as sleeping and eating.
Let us take a close look at the regulated time for each major activity to see how we can take advantage of them for the preservation of our physical health.
In the following presentation, the time slot is noted first in ancient timing, and then the modern timing in the bracket. Please note that the translation of equivalent time is just an approximation. In ancient times, time was noted according to the rise and fall of the sun and moon. It started with zishi, which is equivalent to midnight of a twenty-four hour day.
01 Zishi (23:00-01:00)
At this time, the activity of the gallbladder meridian is at its peak. We should be lying on our bed in deep sleep.
The theory of traditional herbal medicine believes that:
The remaining vital-energy associated with the liver gathers in the gallbladder, and gathers to form essence. The gallbladder is responsible for neutrality and balance. The five main internal organs and other minor organs depend on the gallbladder for balance. Vital-energy associated with the gallbladder will strengthen our courage, and evil spirits cannot invade our body. If the gallbladder is deficient, it will lead to timidity, shortness of breath and the inability to make decisions.
This shows the importance of the gallbladder. Some patients will casually accept a surgery to cut off the gallbladder which is an imprudent act.
Bile secreted by the gallbladder has to be metabolized. When we fall asleep before midnight, the gallbladder will have time to complete the metabolism.
As the saying goes:
When the gall is clear, our brain will be clear.
When we fall asleep two to three hours before midnight, we will have a clear head and a ruddy complexion when waking up in the morning. On the contrary, if we do not fall asleep before midnight, we will look pale the next morning. In this case, the bile cannot be metabolized normally. It becomes concentrated and crystallized, just like salt when seawater evaporates and the salt is concentrated and becomes salt under the sun. An illness called gallbladder stone may then appear. Some patients may show signs of timidity because of this illness.
Zishi is the darkest time of a twenty-four hour day. At this time, the yang vital-energy begins to grow. There is a saying in Huangdi Neijing, a medicine classic:
All eleven internal organs extracted energy from the gallbladder.
At the zishi hours, yang-energy starts to develop. The gallbladder is the first organ to benefit from the energy growth. It is like the spark plug of an automobile, once started, the yang-energy is transmitted to other organs of the body. Blood circulation and vital-energy flows follow throughout the whole body.
Thus, sustaining deep sleep before midnight is crucial to our daytime activities which requires vital-energy. If we want to feel energetic and refreshed, we should fall into a deep sleep before midnight.
We note a strange phenomenon. When we have a heavy dinner, we will feel sleepy around eight or nine o’clock, but then we will wake up and feel refreshed around eleven o’clock. Many people will then start to work after eleven o’clock because they feel energetic. That is bad because we should be asleep before eleven in the evening.
Some people always want to eat something at eleven o’clock in the evening, looking for something to eat in the house. Why is that so?
This is because it is precisely at this time that the yang-energy begins to grow which requires nourishment. The auto-pilot in our body will then urge us to look for fuel, that is, food.
Thus it is very important that we have already fallen asleep before eleven, so as to give our body an opportunity to regrow our yang-energy.
Bear in mind that proper deep sleep at the right time has a close relationship with our life-span and body wellness. If you wonder how you can sleep well, read the last part of this series of posts.
02 Choushi (01:00-03:00)
At this time, the activity of the liver meridian is at its peak. We should remain in a state of deep sleep.
According to traditional herbal medicine, it is said that:
Liver stores blood. People’s thinking and actions are supported by liver blood. Waste blood needs to be eliminated, and new blood needs to be produced.
This type of metabolism is usually completed when the liver meridian is at its most active, which is the choushi. Thus, we should live in such a way to give the liver the chance to perform its function.
The theory of traditional herbal medicine further holds that:
When a person lies down, the blood returns to the liver.
If we do not remain in deep sleep during choushi, our liver will still be producing energy to support our thinking and activities, thus preventing complete metabolism. A person who is not sleeping before choushi will look green and pale the next morning. He will feel tired and in a bad temper. He will be prone to have liver health issues.
03 Yinshi (03:00-05:00)
At this time, the activity of the lung meridian is at its peak. This is a good time to nourish our lungs.
The liver refreshes the blood during choushi. It then provides fresh blood to the lungs which send new blood to the whole body during yinshi. Thus, normal people will look rosy and energetic in the morning due to the supply of new blood.
On the other hand, sick people will react differently during yinshi. Generally, coughing will always be at this time. It is best to leave the patient alone, so as to fully cough out the dirty air in his lungs.
If you practice the Mustang Tuna Technique, a form of deep breathing, this is the best time to do it. You probably will do it around five in the morning when dawn is coming upon us. We cannot imagine that you will wake up at three in the morning and practice deep breathing.
Read more: Mustang Tuna Technique.
04 Maoshi (05:00-07:00)
At this time, the activity of the large intestine meridian is at its peak. At this time, we should get up early to move around to facilitate bowel movements.
Only when the vital-energy associated with the lungs are full can we have a smooth and normal bowel movement.
The lungs fill the whole body with sufficient new blood during yinshi. It then stimulates the large intestine meridian to enter an agitated state to complete the process of absorbing water and nutrients and expelling stool during maoshi.
05 Chenshi (07:00-09:00)
At this time, the activity of the stomach meridian is at its peak. At this time, we should be eating food during our breakfast.
It is easiest for people to digest foods at breakfast at seven o’clock in the morning. With an empty stomach, the stomach fire will be very strong. Our lips are dry, and if it is severe, the lips are cracked or sore.
Eating breakfast at this time is to supplement nutrition. This is the time when the yang-energy in the world is at its peak, so eating breakfast is the easiest time for us to digest. Even if you eat a big breakfast, you will not gain weight.
The spleen meridian and stomach meridian are working hard to transform and transport nutrients at these hours, so we must eat plenty of breakfast and eat well. Eating breakfast is very very important for our life.
06 Sishi (09:00-11:00)
At this time, the activity of the spleen meridian is at its peak. At this time, we should let the spleen work efficiently.
The spleen controls the transformation and movement of nutrients. The spleen governs the blood.
The spleen is the master dispatcher of digestion, absorption, and excretion, and it is also the commander of human blood.
The spleen opens to the mouth, and its splendor resides in the lips.
When the function of the spleen is normal, the digestion and absorption functions will be normal, and the blood quality will be good which will be reflected as rosy lips. If the spleen malfunctions, we will not have sufficient blood energy which will be reflected as pale lips. Furthermore, if the lips are dark or purple, it indicates that coldness has entered the spleen meridian. Then we must take actions to get rid of the coldness from the spleen.

What is the spleen and what does it do?
We may describe the spleen as a maiden working alongside an ancient stove. She puts wood inside the fireplace and fan the wood to help it to burn faster. The spleen is like a busy little maid, but if she is sick, all our internal organs will feel uncomfortable, and we may suffer from illnesses such as diabetes or something.
If the human body has problems such as weight loss, drooling, and swelling, it is usually a spleen illness.
07 Wushi (11:00-13:00)
At this time, the activity of the heart is at its peak. At this time, an afternoon nap will help our heart to rest.
The heart governs the spirit. Its opening is in the tongue. Its splendor is in the face.
Of all our internal organs, the heart occupies the commanding position similar to a monarch. The heart governs the high-level central nervous function activities. These functions are presided over and embodied by the heart, so it is said that the heart governs the spirit.
The vital-energy associated with the heart promotes blood circulation. It nourishes the mind, the qi, and the tendons. It is good for a person to take a nap at noon. It is very good for nourishing the mind, and it can make a person energetic from the afternoon to the evening.
08 Weishi (13:00-15:00)
At this time, the activity of the small intestine is at its peak. At this time, we should make sure our small intestine works properly.
With regard to the foods we eat, the small intestine separates the clear from the turbid. It returns water to the bladder. It sends the dregs to the large intestine. It transports nutrients to the spleen. In other words, the small intestine is busily adjusting a person’s daily nutrition during these hours.
The heart and the small intestine are interdependent on each other. A heart disease is likely to manifest on the small intestine meridian at first.
Some patients may experience chest tightness and palpitation after two o’clock in the afternoon every day, but no heart problems can be found when they go to the hospital for a checkup. That is because the small intestine belongs to the yang category and is manifested on the outside, compared with the heart. Thus, the inside heart problem will be experienced first by the small intestine on the outside during these hours.
09 Shenshi (15:00-17:00)
At this time, the activity of the bladder meridian is at its peak. At this time, we should make sure our bladder is working properly during these hours.
The bladder stores water and body fluid. Water is excreted from the body, and the body fluid circulates in the body: If the bladder suffers from hotness, it may lead to bladder cough, resulting in leaking urine (enuresis.)
The bladder meridian runs from the heel along the back calf, the sides of the middle of the back spine, and goes up to the brain. It is a large meridian.
For example, if we suffer from calf-pain, it is usually a problem with the bladder meridian. It is usually a result of yang-deficiency which is a sign of deficiency of the yang meridian. Once we take care of the yang-deficiency, it will help with our calf-pain. For example, if we suffer from pain in the back of the head, it is usually a problem of the bladder meridian.
For example, if we suffer from memory loss, it is usually related to the bladder meridian. It happens when the yang-energy does not come up from the lower limbs, and the qi and blood at the upper part of the body are not sufficient for the activities, so memory loss will occur. We should apply the Mustang Tuina Technique or the Mustang Shenzhan Technique to help with the situation during these hours.

If you feel particularly drowsy at these hours, it is a problem of yang-deficiency. Once you fix the yang-deficiency, the problem will go away.

10 Youshi (17:00-19:00)
At this time, the activity of the kidney meridian is at its peak. At this time, we should make sure our kidneys are working properly during these hours.
The kidneys store the essence of reproduction and the essence of the internal organs. The kidneys are the foundation at birth.
The human body goes through the process of purifying fire and detoxifying food during shenshi. At youshi, the kidneys enter the stage of storing the essence.
The kidneys govern the storage of essence. What is essence?
The essence of a person is like the money at home. You can buy anything with it. Wherever there is a problem with human cells and tissues, the essence will transform it or help it.
Essence is the most creative primitive force in the human body. When you need something, you just get the essence out and you will get what you want. For example, if you lack red blood cells, the sperm will produce red blood cells.
From another point of view, vitality is stored in the kidneys. Vitality is brought by us at birth. When we are alive, we will have this breath, or qi, or vitality.
Where is this vitality hidden in our body? It is stored in our kidneys.
Everyone is keen on nourishing the kidneys at a certain age. However, the body has its own system of keeping scores. If the meridians are not running smoothly, no matter how much food supplements we take, it will not work. It must depend on our own digestion and absorption capacity.
11 Xushi (19:00-21:00)
At this time, the activity of the pericardium meridian is at its peak. At this time, we should make sure our hearts are working properly during these hours.
The pericardium is the epicardium protecting the heart. It comes with veins, the way for qi and blood to flow. It cannot tolerate harm, otherwise, the heart will be hurt.”
The pericardium is the protective tissue of the heart, and it is also the passage of qi and blood. The pericardium meridian is active at xushi, and its prosperity can remove external pathogens around the heart and keep the heart in good condition.
The heart is immune to harm. Then who will suffer? The answer is the pericardium will take the fall and be harmed. Heart problems in many people can be summarized as illnesses of the pericardium meridian.
If your heart beats very fast, it means that the pericardium is harmed. First, the heart beats fast, and then the problem goes along the pericardium meridian. The principle of treating illnesses in traditional herbal medicine is to start to check the major organs and then the minor organs to find the affected organ. Thus, in order to treat such diseases, the doctor must understand the meridians.
The pericardium also governs happiness or joy. Therefore, if you want some entertainment, do it at xushi.
12 Haishi (21:00-23:00)
At this time, the activity of the sanjiao meridian is at its peak. At this time, we should make sure we sleep at haishi.
The Sanjiao is the largest organ among the six minor organs. Its function is to control all qi channels and dredging the water channels. During haishi, the sanjiao can activate all the channels.
If a person sleeps at haishi, all the channels will have a chance to recuperate, which is very beneficial to the body. Centenarians have a common feature, that is, they sleep at haishi. It’s a pity that few people can do it nowadays, so fewer and fewer people with ruddy complexions are seen on the street, and more and more girls are painted with makeup to mask over the paleness.
The zodiac sign of haishi is a pig, and a pig will sleep when its stomach is full. Therefore, we should rest at haishi, immersing our body and soul in the warm darkness. Let our life and body reincarnate while resting.

Qi and blood deficiency is a common traditional herbal medicine syndrome type. It refers to the problem of both qi deficiency and blood deficiency in people. The clinical manifestation of qi deficiency is that people present a state of relatively low function. Blood deficiency refers to the fact that the material basis of the human body represented by blood is relatively deficient.
The specific symptoms are divided into qi deficiency and blood deficiency as:
01 Qi deficiency
01 Deficiency of lung qi: the person feels shortness of breath and difficulty in breathing.
02 Deficiency of spleen qi: the person will have problems such as indigestion, edema, poor appetite and endogenous phlegm.
03 Deficiency of kidney qi: the person will feel that the inhalation is very shallow and cannot be fully inhaled and that the waist and knees are sore and weak. Men have less sperm and infertility, and women have problems such as uterine cold and infertility.
02 Blood deficiency
The person usually will appear to have a sallow complexion and feel that the blood is not enough. The pulse condition is as thin as a piece of thread. For women, there will be menstrual problems, such as less menstrual flow, short menstrual duration, irregular menstruation, and dull complexion. From the performance of the tongue, there will be a pale tongue, or a fat tongue with tooth marks on the edge of the tongue.
Therefore, the combination of qi deficiency and blood deficiency is the symptom of both qi and blood deficiency.
02 Observation of symptoms
What exactly is qi and blood deficiency? How do we know we have qi and blood deficiency syndrome?
Deficiency of qi refers to the symptoms shown by the weakening of the internal organs of the body. This kind of deficiency is mostly caused by long-term illness, excessive fatigue, or old age and infirmity.
Blood deficiency means that the blood in the body cannot nourish the internal organs and meridians, usually due to congenital reasons such as acquired weakness of the spleen and stomach, acute and chronic bleeding, excessive thinking, blood stasis hindering new blood, or intestinal parasites.
Qi and blood deficiency, where should we look?
01 look at the tongue
The tongue with qi and blood deficiency is pale in color. The tongue is large, and tooth marks appear on the edge of the tongue.
02 look at the eyes
The liver is the organ that stores blood, and the blood houses the spirit, and the spirit shows in the eyes. The eyes are black and white, clear, bright, and radiant for a healthy person. If the eyes are sluggish and dull, it is a sign of failure of the performance of qi and blood.
03 look at the eye bags
Traditional herbal medicine believes that the formation of eye bags is directly related to the spleen. The spleen and stomach transport and transform nutrients which are the source of qi and blood. If the eye bags are large and swollen, it may indicate that our qi and blood are deficient.
04 look at the hair
Huangdi Neijing, a medical classic, said:
The hair indicates the remainder of the blood.
That is, excess blood in the body will nourish the hair. If there is insufficient qi and blood, the blood cannot reach the highest point of the body which is our hair. The growth rate of hair is related to liver blood. If liver blood is insufficient, hair grows slowly, dries up easily, and breaks easily.
05 look at the palm
When the blood is sufficient, the palms are ruddy. If the palms are uneven in color and prone to red and white dots, it means that the blood is deficient. Furthermore, the finger muscle of those people with sufficient qi and blood will be ruddy and plump, and it will rebound quickly when pressed. Those people whose thumb will rebound slowly are an indication of insufficient qi and blood.
06 feel the hands and feet
Some people have cold hands and feet in winter, and some people have cold hands and feet in summer. This is actually a manifestation of the circulation of qi and blood. If enough qi and blood can be sent to the extremities, they are warm. If they are cold, it is a sign of insufficient qi and blood. Of course, if the fingertips of the hands and feet are full, it also means that the blood is sufficient.
07 look at the nails
Look at the meniscus of the nails. Except for the little finger, every finger should have a meniscus. If there is no meniscus on the finger or there is only a half moon on the thumb, it means that the body is cold, the circulation function is poor, and the blood is insufficient. If there are vertical lines on the nails, we should be concerned. It shows that the body has suffered a deficiency of both qi and blood.
08 watch the sleep
Falling asleep at night as fast as a child, sleeping steadily, deeply, and being able to sleep until we wake up naturally indicates that our body has sufficient qi and blood. If we have short sleep, light, easy to wake up, heavy breathing, frequent nocturia, and continuous snoring, we probably have insufficient blood. If we suffer from lethargy, it is also an indication of insufficient blood.
09 look at the skin
A person’s complexion and skin condition can also reflect the condition of qi and blood. Healthy people’s skin is smooth, white and pink, radiant and without markings. If the skin is rough, the color is pale (lung qi deficiency), yellow (spleen qi deficiency), green (liver and gallbladder qi deficiency), red (heart and brain qi deficiency), black (kidney qi deficiency), and long spots represent deficiency of qi in the body.
10 see overall status
If a person is often short of breath, sleepy, chest tightness, listless, and easily tired, this situation is also a manifestation of qi and blood deficiency. People with sufficient energy and blood tend to be energetic and refreshed.
How many symptoms do you have? If you have more than three, you are in trouble, and you should pay attention to replenishing qi and blood, to bolster your energy.
Luckily, there is an easy solution. Drink this special soup every morning and you will be rid of qi and blood deficiency.
03 A solution huangqi danggui soup
Li Dongyuan, one of the Four Masters of Jin and Yuan Dynasty in the history of Chinese medicine, has a famous recipe for nourishing qi and blood in his works, Treatise on Stomach and Spleen.
His prescription is called the huangqi danggui soup.
Note that you should consult a professional herbal medicine practitioner to use this prescription for yourself because each body constitution is different.
01 Preparation
Ingredients: 30 grams of astragalus, 10 grams each of angelica and red dates.
01 Wash the astragalus, angelica and red dates. Put them in a pot and soak them in water for thirty minutes. Bring the water to a boil and cook for forty minutes the way you prepare a soup. Then decant the water into a big bowl or glass container. There are no exact guidelines on the amount of water. We usually start with 600 ml of water and end up with one bowl of soup, about 200 ml.
02 Do not throw away the dregs. Add appropriate amounts of water to the dregs of the medicine, and cook for thirty minutes the way you prepare a soup, Then decant the water into the same bowl or container to mix the two batches of soup prepared.
03 You may then drink a bowl of soup every morning.
Note: You can buy the ingredients in large Chinese supermarkets or Chinese traditional herbal medicine stores, or use our buying service.
If you keep the soup in a fridge overnight, you should warm your bowl of soup the next morning before you drink it.
04 Health Efficacy
The soup is reputed to nourish qi and blood. It can be used as an auxiliary diet therapy for sallow complexion, dizziness, sores and unhealed cuts, joint pain and other illnesses caused by insufficient qi and blood.
Astragalus and angelica can also be used to make a stew. We usually make a stew with black-bone chicken which is delicious. At the same time it is reputed to regulate the spleen and stomach, and replenish qi and blood. This soup is especially suitable for women after giving birth to a child and during the confinement period.
05 The concepts
Qi and blood are two major types of basic substances in the human body, which occupy a very important position in the life activities of the human body.
Qi has the functions of promoting and regulating, warming and cooling, defending, solidifying and acting as an intermediary on the human body.
Blood has the function of moistening and nourishing the human body and transforming the spirit.
Qi is an extremely fine substance with strong vitality and continuous movement in the human body. It is one of the basic substances that constitute the human body and maintain the life activities of the human body. Qi circulates continuously, promotes and regulates the metabolism in the human body, and maintains the life process of the human body. The cessation of movement of qi means the end of life.
The concept of qi in traditional herbal medicine may have originated from the ancients’ observation of the vital phenomena of the human body. The ancients came to a simple and intuitive understanding of qi by observing some obvious and vital life phenomena of the human body, such as the in and out of qi when breathing, and the steaming heat that comes out with sweat during activities.
Coupled with the flow of qi in the body realized during qigong exercises, so speculation, association, abstraction and purification were made on the basis of the gradual accumulation of simple knowledge. The concept that qi in the human body is a fine substance that can flow in the human body was gradually formed.
With the deepening of understanding, we form a systematic knowledge of the source, function, movement, and form of qi in the human body. We also understand its relationship with the organs. We thus established the qi theory of traditional herbal medicine.

In traditional herbal medicine, the most important secret to keep the human body healthy is to maintain a state of harmony in the body, mind, and spirit.
In health science, this state of harmony is called homeostasis. Homeostasis is any self-regulating process by which an organism tends to maintain stability while adjusting to conditions that are best for its survival. If homeostasis is successful, life continues; if it’s unsuccessful, it results in a disaster or death of the organism.
In traditional herbal medicine, only when the body, mind, and spirit are in harmony can the human body be truly healthy. This kind of harmony is not only the harmony inside the body, but also the harmony between the body and the external environment.
In particular, it emphasizes the huge influence of emotions on human health. It is believed that when the human body gradually ages with age, the physiological ability to cope with psychological changes will weaken, and it will no longer have a strong adjustment ability like young people, so it is also easy to get sick.
Every patient encountered by a doctor has various disharmonious problems, which requires the doctor to analyze the different conditions of the patient and then help the patient to correct and adjust, and finally return to the state of harmony.
02 What is harmony
What is harmony in traditional herbal medicine? It is a long explanation.
In traditional herbal medicine, harmony consists of four words: zhong zheng ping he. Zhong means central and not biased. Zheng means to be upright. Ping means flat, and aims to pursue stability. He means peaceful.
In summary, the four words mean a state of balanced, neutral, peaceful and harmony. Regarding the causes of disharmony in the human body, the predecessors of traditional herbal medicine also made a systematic summary. Traditional herbal medicine believes that the main causes of human illness are divided into three types: external cause, internal cause, and non-internal and non-external cause.
The external cause includes the six qi (wind, cold, heat, dampness, dryness, fire.) The normal six qi nourish people without hurting them. The six qi, if in excess, will be transformed into causes of illnesses.
The internal cause is the seven emotions (joy, anger, worry, thought, sadness, fear, shock) together with food and fatigue.
The non-external cause is trauma, car accidents and so on.
Every doctor attaches great importance to the cause of illness of the patient. Among all the causes of the patient, the adjustment of the seven emotions is the most important. Ye Tianshi said in his medical records:
This illness cannot be cured with medicine and food. The patient has to be happy in order to be cured.
Most of the non-internal and non-external causes are unexpected injuries, which are difficult to prevent, and only need to be treated in time.
03 Manifestations of an illness
In traditional herbal medicine, When a person is out of harmony, he gets sick. If he is adjusted well, he will naturally not get sick. Therefore, the focus of traditional herbal medicine is on the person, not on the disease.
According to Huangdi Neijing, a medical classic:
A neutral person will not get sick.
What is a neutral person? A person who is in the middle is called a neutral person.
How can a person achieve a state of harmony?
Sun Simiao, a great medical scientist in the Tang Dynasty, said in his book Thousand Gold Prescriptions:
If the moral of a person is not complete, even if he were to take the jade liquid and golden pill, he will not live long. The day his morality is perfect, his life will be prolonged without praying for longevity, blessings are attained without seeking blessings, this is the great scripture of health preservation! Only by respecting The Way and morality and accumulating goodness and virtue can he be healthy physically and mentally, and achieve both happiness and longevity.
What are the manifestations of an illness? Too much or not enough, whether it is an illness of the body or an illness of the heart, this is the case.
Lao Tzu said:
The way of heaven is to make up for what is lacking while destroying what is excess.
If there is more than enough, it is in excess. If it is insufficient, it is lacking. According to the Way of Heaven, if you possess more, you will be damaged. If you don’t have enough, you will be compensated. This damage and compensation is to restore you to a good state through various methods, that is, you will be in a harmonious state.
04 Treating an illness
How does traditional herbal medicine treat an illness?
One is body adjustment. If something is in excess, we will relieve it. If it is insufficient, we will replenish it. We are not concerned about the illness. We merely try to restore the body to a balanced state.
The second is to adjust your mind. Once you have a peaceful mind, your qi will be in harmony. When you are not seeking excess, you will understand the goodness of nothingness. and your qi will follow with it. You will then keep the righteous spirit inside your body, and an illness will have no place to stay.
When a person’s five internal organs, seven emotions, qi and blood, and yin and yang are in harmony, he will be free from all diseases.
Nowadays, more and more people are paying attention to health preservation, and more and more older people prefer to follow the advice of traditional herbal medicine. After the age of forty, the vitality of the body will begin to weaken, and after the age of fifty, the change of vitality will be very fast.
At this age, it is not easy for us to defend against the six qi evils, and they easily invade our body to cause serious illnesses over time. Therefore, there is a saying in herbal medicine that says that there are no minor illnesses after age fifty. If we are sick, it must not be a minor illness.
Therefore, we must pay attention to illness as we age, as the vitality is weakened and the resistance is weak, it is even more necessary to prevent problems before they happen. We should understand the practice of health preservation, disease prevention and treatment of chronic illnesses. We should not be sloppy in taking care of our body health.
05 A case of high moral
For four years, Lauren Sánchez has been quietly working to help Amazon founder and her now fiancé, Jeff Bezos, strategically give away his vast wealth to a variety of causes.
Their involvement in their philanthropic projects helps their relationship in more than one way.
01 Giving back
Sánchez, 53, a former journalist who was born in Albuquerque, New Mexico, cites her humble beginnings as her motivation for giving back. In her giving back to society, she achieves the high ground of morality, and thus satisfaction, and thus happiness.
Not only that, she chose the people who have the same ideals to support, so their voices can be heard many times over. Thus her good deeds will have greater influence in this world.
Sánchez and Bezos said they wanted to bring a “little bit of light” to the people who use unity instead of conflict to resolve issues. “We wanted to amplify their voices because the voices that are really negative seem to get amplified in this world,” she said.
02 Mutual admiration
Both Lauren and Jeff have the same objectives in life. Thus they work together like yin and yang in great harmony. That way, they both achieve health and happiness because of the harmony.
As for what makes their relationship work?
As Bezos said:
“It’s easy. We bring each other energy, we respect each other. So, it’s fun to work together.”
This is a good example of good harmony. With harmony, you can bet that they will be healthy and happy.

When we are young, we sleep whenever we like, and we work whenever we like. Nothing bad seems to happen to us. As we turn forty, we keep on doing whatever we have been doing in the past forty years, thinking that nothing bad will happen to us.
Then, what happens?
01 Do not stay up all night
Sleep is a major function of health preservation. Nourishment is to replace corrupt cells with a large number of healthy cells. If you can’t sleep all night, you can’t replace new cells. If one million cells die during the day and only half a million cells are replenished overnight, the body will become more and more depleted as time goes on.
Professor Michael Rosebash talked about a group of rare cases. In the past two decades, doctors from various countries have discovered some “families who can’t sleep”. People in these families have strange illnesses and have not slept well for at least thirty to forty years. Staying up late breaks the delicate clock in the body, and illness creeps in.
Another laureate, Michael Yang, found in a study in 2015 that due to staying up late and lack of sleep, parts of nerve synapses were engulfed in large numbers by astrocytes. In layman’s terms: staying up late will cause the brain to start eating itself. He also found that the failure of a key gene that regulates the rhythm promotes tumorigenesis.
02 Nourish the liver
In fact, staying up late is most harmful to the liver. Because the liver is the largest detoxification organ in our body, and night is the working time for the liver to concentrate. If we don’t rest at this time, but eat and drink a lot, it will overload the liver. When the liver really screams in pain, the problem is very serious.
People who go to bed after eleven o’clock must add this to boiled water: red dates, and drink it.
Nothing can offset the damage of staying up late, but, if you have to stay up late because of work, you should drink jujube water everyday to protect the liver.
Experiments have shown that drinking jujube water for people with poor liver function every day for a week can achieve the effect of nourishing the liver and promoting liver detoxification.
Traditional herbal medicine also believes that jujube water has the effects of nourishing qi and blood, soothing the liver and relieving depression. Break open the red dates with rich pulp and soak them in warm water, so that the vitamins are more conducive to the liver’s absorption.
03 A million dollars daily routine
Ancient herbal health preservation practice emphasized following Nature. The human body also has its favorite rhythm and rules in modern life. If we comply with the body’s biological clock, pinpoint the moment of weakness, and fill in the gaps, the body can be adjusted to the best state. On the contrary, it will cause various problems and endanger health.
05:00-06:00 Sleep more even if awake
Many middle-aged and elderly people can’t sleep at night and wake up early in the morning. If you wake up early at five or six o’clock in the morning, you should try to continue to sleep. If you can’t sleep, you can close your eyes and meditate. You may lie on the bed to massage your abdomen and rub your hands, which will help ensure vigorous energy during the day.
06:30 Do stretching exercise
Middle-aged and elderly people may exercise for ten to twenty minutes every morning. It is recommended that you should focus on gentle exercises, such as stretching, walking, yoga, or Taiji.
You may do stretching exercises in bed. We have several stretching exercises for you to choose from.

07:00-08:00 Eat a highly nutritious breakfast
Starchy foods such as buns, fried dough sticks, and sesame seeds pancakes are the main force on most people’s breakfast table. However, in addition to starchy foods, it is healthier to have a glass of milk or soy milk, an egg, and a small portion of fruit.
For people who engage in physical work, a typical American breakfast of eggs, bacon, sausage, or ham which is full of protein is highly recommended.
10:00 Eat a handful of nuts
Middle-aged and elderly people should eat a small handful of nuts around ten o’clock in the morning, which is good for cardiovascular and cerebrovascular health. Peanuts, walnuts, almonds, pine nuts, etc. are all good choices.
11:00-12:30 Enjoy a miscellaneous lunch
Eat a variety of foods for lunch. Elderly people must eat lunch with miscellaneous ingredients. You should try to add as many ingredients as possible when cooking. For example, put some mushrooms when frying green vegetables, and put some diced carrots and cucumbers when making meat dishes. The amount of each dish is not large, but the variety and color should be as rich as possible.
13:00 Take a thirty-minute nap
Half an hour after lunch, fatigue strikes. At this time, you might as well drink a glass of water first, and then take a nap. Naps are good for lowering blood pressure, protecting the heart, enhancing memory, and improving immunity. However, the nap time should not be too long, just twenty to thirty minutes.
14:00 Have a cup of green tea
After waking up from a nap, people will always feel a little tired. At this time, a cup of green tea is very good for the body. Studies have shown that green tea can reduce the risk of cancer.
15:00 Bask in the sun
If the weather is good, middle-aged and elderly people can go to exercise outdoors. At this time, the sun is warm and it is a good time to bask in the sun. If it rains or the sun is too hot, you can do aerobics and stretching exercises at home.
16:00 Drink a cup of yogurt
At four o’clock in the afternoon, people’s blood sugar begins to rise. At this time, middle-aged and elderly people can add another meal, that is, drink a cup of yogurt or eat two slices of whole wheat bread.
18:00-20:00 Share a slow dinner with your family
Dinner must be light, to check and fill in the gaps in the nutrition of the day. Don’t eat dinner too late, otherwise it will affect sleep. Dinner time is generally relatively abundant, and you can enjoy it slowly with your family, chew slowly, and chat, which is undoubtedly a happy family time.
20:00 Stand for a quarter of an hour
After dinner, many people immediately nestle on the sofa to watch TV, which is very harmful to the stomach. It is best to stand for fifteen minutes after dinner, or call a long-lost friend while walking, or water the flowers and wash the dishes.
21:00 Brush your teeth early
It is best to brush your teeth at nine o’clock in the evening, so as to ensure that you will not eat after nine o’clock in the evening. You can also use this time to do something you like, such as reading a book.
22:00 Turn down the bedroom temperature
The best time for a person to sleep is twenty-two o’clock, and no more than twenty-three o’clock at the latest. Scientific research shows that keeping the bedroom cool can reduce the risk of diabetes and other metabolic diseases, and it is best to turn the room temperature down a little before going to bed.
A healthy day is now over, sleep well for a better tomorrow!
Remember to tell your friends that this is the most scientific and healthy daily routine.
Do not stay up all night!
Do not stay up all night!

Say important things three times.
