As practitioners of life cultivation, we learn and practice deep breathing, or the tuna technique. In practicing the tuna technique, we learn the proper way to do deep breathing.
Now deep breathing involves the exhale and inhale of air, and the circulation of air and vital-energy between breaths, which is called Qi. In our practice, we classify the combined air and vital-energy into three forms, namely the superficial-energy, the nutrient-energy, and the true-energy.
In our practice of the tuna technique, we actually learn how to control the three forms of energy to benefit our physical health and our mental state.
We learn the tuna technique in stages. The first stage will involve superficial-energy. The second stage will involve nutrient-energy. The third stage will involve true-energy. Now we will go into the practice of each stage and see how it will benefit us in the long run.
As we have mentioned before, the proper way to learn and practice a technique is to do it this way.
- Read the instructions, understand them, memorize them.
- Visualize the instructions in your mind. If you have forgotten them, go back to read the instructions again.
- Visualize the instructions into video clips.
- Run the video clips over your mind until you are very familiar with them.
- Now you have learned and you can start to practice. You practice from the eyes in your mind, not your physical eyes.

Stage Two. Nutrient-energy Practice
As we go into the second stage of practicing deep breathing, we will try to improve our nutrient-energy. It is derived from nutrients, and that is why it is called nutrient-energy.
Nutrient-energy is also known as life-energy or birth-energy or prosperous-energy. It is so-named because it is partly derived from birth or the beginning of our life.
Nutrient-energy is stored in our spinal cavity and travels through the vital-energy paths (meridians) and blood vessels, so it is also responsible for distributing nutrients throughout our body and it can moisten our internal organs.
Nutrient-energy circulates in the vital-energy paths of the human body about fifty-two cycles within a twenty-four hour period. It is not something we can guide and direct with our minds. If someone tells us that he can open up our vital-energy paths and direct our nutrient-energy to go wherever he wants, we usually ignore him.
Nutrient-energy naturally circulates in the vital-energy paths and does not follow our wishes. Therefore, nutrient-energy cannot be practiced, but can only be adjusted or tuned up.
How do we adjust it? There are several ways to adjust our nutrient-energy. The most obvious way is to increase or decrease the nutrients that we take in with our foods and drinks.
Nutrient-energy is directly provided by the nutrients so if we adjust the nutrients that we take in, it will adjust our nutrient-energy. To learn more about it, refer to the Mustang Dietary Technique that we have discussed elsewhere. There are other less obvious ways as follows.
First, hold up your hands as if you are holding water, then pour the imaginary air onto the top of your head. This motion will supposedly smooth the flow of nutrient-energy along the vital-energy paths.
Second, practice the Mustang Shenzhan Technique that we have discussed elsewhere. Many of the techniques will help to adjust our nutrient-energy flows.
Third, when you detect the onset of a cold, you may practice the Mustang Jingzuo Technique (a form of meditation), or the Mustang Tuina Technique (a form of massage), or the use of acupuncture. All these techniques will help to smooth the flow of nutrient-energy in the large intestine vital-energy path and the lung vital-energy path which will help you to prevent a cold or to recover from a cold.
Modern medicine has been able to detect whether the electric field of the human body is balanced by measuring the electricity of specific points on the vital-energy paths, so as to diagnose whether a person is healthy or not. It indirectly proves that nutrient-energy can be adjusted but not practiced.
To be continued.
