Emotions in Check

马晓山

As practitioners of life cultivation, we know that there are basically two ways for our body to feel uncomfortable.

The environmental elements such as cold and wind may cause our body to feel uncomfortable. A good example is a common cold. Our body feels uncomfortable because we catch a cold.

When the body imbalance starts from environmental changes, our body is invaded through our mouth, nose, or skin. They are easily detectable. We try very hard to keep our body away from the harmful effects of environmental elements. We discuss these factors under the category Body Cultivation.

Our emotion is another way for our body to feel uncomfortable. When a robber yells to us: your life or your money, we will be very uncomfortable when that happens. Our emotion is a cause for body imbalance which will lead to body problems.

If the body imbalance starts from emotional changes, the emotion will attack the internal organs right away without recourse. Thus it is always more serious if the body imbalance comes from emotional disturbance. As practitioners of life cultivation, we try to cope with this using techniques that we cover under the category Mind Cultivation.

01 Keeping emotions in balance

As practitioners of life cultivation, we usually associate the happy emotion as a good emotion. That is why in fairy tales, people live happily ever after.

When we are happy, the energy will flow slowly and evenly, making us feel calm and less nervous. In normal circumstances, happiness will relax us and will aid in our circulations with a peaceful mind.

As our emotion goes through ebbs and flows, it will make our illness worse, sometimes quickly. Thus it is advisable to calm down a sick person. Emotional stability is very important to our health. We all know people who die from grief.

A person who has high blood pressure should control his anger. When he is angry, his liver will suddenly be filled with energy. His blood pressure will suddenly go up. It may lead to dizziness, or he may even faint. He may faint with loss of speech. Half of his body may be paralyzed. His eyes and mouth may be skewed.

Anger seems to be our number one energy and we should avoid anger by all means. One way to do that is with the Mustang Jingzuo Technique which is our unique form of meditation.

Find out more about our emotional disturbance and take care of it right away, and we will soon be healthy again.

02 Mind Retreat Practice

Sit (or lying) on the bed. Let go of the body and mind, as if the whole body has melted down. Do not exert any force, as if we do not have a body.

Breathe naturally. Do not allow the mind to exert any force. If we think of anything, we are exerting a force.

Focus our mind on the bottom of our feet, leading fire downwards, and naturally water will flow upwards. Thus the blood and vital force circulation systems will be working smoothly.

Do not allow any part of the body to exert any force, including the mind, the breathing, and the limbs. As practitioners of life cultivation, we must comply with : eyes not to see, ears not to hear, nose not to smell, tongue not to taste, mouth not to take in, mind not to think. This is the only condition.

If we think or smell or feel, we are exerting force. If we move our fingers or limbs, we are exerting force. If we breathe heavily, we are exerting force.

Eventually we will breathe naturally and evenly. Besides using our nose and mouth for inhaling and exhaling, we are using all 84,000 skin pores for breathing. We will attain the state of no self, no body, no force, and no mind. The natural mind has returned to its original position. The fire has returned to its birth-position, or, the fire and the water has achieved a natural balance.

This is the knack of our practice to perform standard body maintenance and repair, getting rid of all illness.

When we are practicing Mustang Tuna Technique, doing deep breathing in a relaxed state, we will sense the exchange of minute particles between the human body and Nature. When we inhale, we use our lungs to take in air, but we are also venting minute particles from our entire body, releasing them into Nature. When we exhale from our lungs, at the same time we are also absorbing air from Nature through the pores of the entire body.

According to Lao Tzu: “There exists in Nature a Bellow.” A Bellow is an ancient equipment used in blowing air to help produce fire in a blast furnace. It compares the function of the lungs to the equipment.

Our heart is active at noon. We may walk for fifteen minutes at noon. We may also close our eyes and take a nap. This will improve our heart.
