Building Health Foundation II

马晓山

John had engaged in building a health foundation for several years. He advised young people to engage in building a health foundation in order to have a healthy body for a long time, without sickness and illness.

In order to maintain a healthy body, we as practitioners of life cultivation, recognize that certain activities will produce unhealthy results. We will always guard against them.

Prolonged sightings will interfere with our blood circulation. Prolonged lying down will interfere with our energy circulation. Prolonged sitting down will hurt our muscles. Prolonged standing will make our bones suffer. Prolonged walking will hurt our ligaments. This is summarized as the five activities that will cause body suffering.

03 The Seven Devils

As practitioners of life cultivation, we have learned to watch out for the five activities that may cause problems for maintaining body health. We will also make certain that we are not hurt by the seven devils that may harm our body.

One, a full stomach (resulting from eating too much) will harm our spleen and our digestive system.

Two, anger will reverse our energy circulation and will harm our liver.

Three, heavy lifting and sitting on wet ground will harm our kidneys.

Four, drinking ice cold water in cold weather will harm our lungs.

Five, thinking too much when tired will harm our mind.

Six, exposing ourselves to bad weather will harm our body.

Seven, fear without control will harm our will power.

If we constantly overeat, it will hurt our digestive system in the long run. We should stop eating when we are eighty percent full. Do not be tempted by good tasting food. An older person should eat less at each meal, and eat more frequently if they are hungry. This will help to improve his digestive system.

There are many ways to control the seven devils if we pay attention to them and nub them in the bud when they surface. Anger and Fear are two of the most destructive emotions. We learn how to maintain or contain these emotions when we are engaging in health foundation building.

04 Technique to lessen harmful effects

As practitioners of life cultivation, there is one stretching exercise that we do to lessen the harmful effects of the five activities and seven devils. Here is the procedure.

One, stand straight, spread feet the same width as shoulders, palms on the sides.

Two, turn your head to the right, slowly, looking to the back, until you can turn no more.

Three, return your head to the normal position, slowly.

Four, turn your head to the left, slowly, looking to the back, until you can turn no more.

Five, return your head to the normal position, slowly.

Sixth, repeat the motions for thirty six times.

The exercise will increase blood and energy circulation. It will calm our mind. It will prevent the five activities and seven devils from hurting our body. It will also maintain good health for our neck.

When you perform the exercise, note that when you turn your head to the right or left, make sure your body does not move with your head. The body should be straight and firmly anchored to the ground.

You may also incorporate deep breathing with this exercise. You inhale when you turn your head to the left or right, and you exhale when you return your head to its normal position.

05 Another technique

Here is another simple exercise to increase energy circulation. In our life cultivation practice, we call it the Swing and Slap Exercise. Here is the procedure.

One, stand with your feet spread. Twist and turn your head and waist. As you turn, you slap your back, shoulders, upper arms with your hand and palm.

You look to the right and left as you swing your arms. You look to the right as you slap with your right hand. You look to the left as you slap with your left hand.

While you slap on your shoulder with one arm, you slap on your waist with the other arm.

This exercise will increase energy and blood circulation. It will loosen the muscles and joints. It will increase lung capacity.

06 Baby for Illustration

A baby is void of all bad emotions. He is a pure joy at heart. He shows no harm to anyone. Even an animal will not eat a baby unless it is really very very hungry. A female animal may even feed and take care of a human baby.

When a baby clenches his fingers into a ball, it is very hard to separate the fingers. The baby puts his thumb into the center of the palm and then curves the other four fingers into a ball, which is different from the way an adult does it.

The penis of a baby is naturally erect, showing it has full energy circulation when born. The energy that a baby is born with is known as birth-energy and it will follow him throughout his whole life. It will naturally diminish as he ages and totally depleted upon his death.

The baby emits a sound quite different from an adult. He uses the frontal of his head, the center of his thorax, and the center of his belly to emit a sound. Thus his sound is clear, strong, and will travel fast. He can continue to emit the sound without a change of breath.

As the baby grows, he deviates from its natural course, making him prone to illness. It will affect his health and he will age prematurely.

In order to disrupt the aging process, it is advisable for a person to live naturally and lead a simple and carefree life just like a baby.

Dealing with Inflammatory Body Constitution

马晓山

As practitioners of life cultivation, we discover that many of us have an inflammatory body constitution. There are many types of inflammation, such as skin inflammation, lung inflammation (pneumonia), stomach inflammation (gastritis) and women’s vaginal inflammation (vaginitis) etc. These inflammations are very troublesome to us and we will try to get rid of them and return our body to a homeostasis state.

Why are some people prone to inflammation? Inflammation is closely related to an individual’s body constitution. For example, people with low immunity are prone to inflammation.

In our practice of life cultivation, if we have one or more of the following symptoms, we will say we are in an inflammatory state. These symptoms are (1) pain, (2) redness and swelling of skin, and (3) infectious broken skin.

For example, a sore throat is said to be pharyngitis; joint pain is said to be arthritis, tenosynovitis, synovitis, periostitis; gastrointestinal pain is said to be gastroenteritis. In addition, we have rhinitis, pneumonia, mumps, mastitis, meningitis, synovitis and various inflammations.

We will live a life full of inflammation if we believe the healthcare industry who tries very hard to sell us various types of pills. We are on fire!

马晓山

Characteristics of Inflammatory Body

People with inflammatory constitution have poor sleep. People with poor sleep for a long time will have poor heart function. When the heart function is poor, the heat dissipation capacity will be low, and the body will dissipate heat unevenly.

The heart function refers to the strength of the heartbeat and the ability of the heart to pump blood. If the standard heart function is calculated with a full score of 10, and if a person’s heart function is only 5 points, blood will not reach the far end of the body, resulting in cold hands and feet.

At this point, if a heat wave comes along, a person with poor heart function will not dissipate heat in the normal function, resulting in an inflammatory body condition.

Chronic inflammation will result in certain places where blood circulation is impeded and heat accumulation increases. This will aggravate the inflammation condition which may lead to acute inflammation.

The best outlet for our body to disperse heat is the orifice of the human body which includes the eyes, nose, mouth, and ears. They are close to the heart, and a large amount of heat will gather close to our heart.

Therefore, if we suffer from chronic inflammation of the facial features such as pharyngitis and rhinitis, it is easy for them to become acute inflammation. Even if we do not have chronic inflammation in our head, it is easier for us to have acute inflammation in the facial features because of the close proximity of the heat source.

Thus, we will have a lesser chance of getting an inflammatory constitution if we live in a clean air environment compared to a foul air environment. Thus, it is more advisable for us to live in the rural areas with plenty of trees as compared to a city center full of cars.

Building Youthful Health Foundation I

马晓山

John had engaged in building a health foundation for several years. He advised young people to engage in building a health foundation in order to have a healthy body for a long time, without sickness and illness.

His good friend Mark who was fifty two years old wanted to know whether it was too late for him to build a health foundation.

Mark’s friend Robin said that it was better late than never.

John said there were four things he did to build a youthful health foundation. One, he practiced deep breathing. Two, he practiced breath holding. Three, he practiced solitary seating. Fourth, he practiced mind control. He built a youthful health foundation in one hundred days. He practiced sex abstinence while building health foundation.

Robin was surprise to know that a practitioner had to forego sex for one hundred days. John explained that it was advisory, not a necessity. Less sex is more healthy for the body, especially for a young man.

John explained that each person might have to practice for a longer or shorter period of time. It varies from person to person depending on the body constitution of each person. After one hundred days, the body will adjust to the new conditions, and the person would benefit from all his practices.

The instructions for the practice is in Mustang Bodywork Guide which is available to members of Mustang Life Cultivation Club upon request.

马晓山

Youthful Health Foundation Benefits

The good results of a youthful health foundation would be obvious after one hundred days. However, one must do it on a daily basis without interruption.

One, with total immersion in the practice, our body will become strong and healthy. We will have a very strong immune system. You will not get sick easily.

Two, we will have a very strong concentration power.

Three, we will be used to deep breathing as it becomes natural to us.

Fourth, our breathing will become smooth, even, slow, easy, and long.

Fifth, we will have improved our temper. We will slow down and we will not short our temper. We will be more tolerant and we will be nice to other people.

Sixth, the lower part of our body, especially our naval portion, will become warm, as if we are at the point of ejaculation.

Once we have achieved these results, we have built a strong youthful health foundation.

It may take us more or less than one hundred days to achieve these results, depending on our body constitution. Once we have achieved these results, we may stop here. If we keep on practicing, we will get permanent health.

As practitioners of life cultivation, some of us may go on to the next stage of practice and we will achieve more than just body health.

The Five Banned Activities

In order to maintain a healthy body, we as practitioners of life cultivation, recognize that certain activities will produce unhealthy results. We will always guard against them.

Prolonged sightings will interfere with our blood circulation. Prolonged lying down will interfere with our energy circulation. Prolonged sitting down will hurt our muscles. Prolonged standing will make our bones suffer. Prolonged walking will hurt our ligaments. This is summarized as the five activities that will cause body suffering.

How long is a prolonged activity? Again, it varies from person to person. When we sit in front of a computer, it may take one to two hours to feel a sore muscle. Once we detect that, we should cease the activity, and do some stretching exercises to recover from sore muscles.

An older person should not walk too long although walking is encouraged, especially if he is suffering from joint pain, especially knee problems.

Foods for the Summer

马晓山

The seasons change in different ways throughout the year, and all things go through the growth and harvest stages. This is the principle of nature and we, as practitioners of life cultivation, go with the flow.

We live in an environment that witnesses seasonal changes. Therefore, we should live a life that is in harmony with Nature, and our foods and drinks and daily activities should follow the seasonal changes.

As practitioners of life cultivation, we follow the practice of four seasonal changes and five ways to enhance our lifestyle. Here are our diet plans for the Summer.

Foods for Summer

马晓山

01 General Principle

In the summer, even when we are not sick, we generally have to take in more nutrients. The additional nutrients should come from plant food, scientifically balanced, especially for the old and weak.

As practitioners of life cultivation, we usually elect to eat more protein from fish, meat, eggs, and beans. We also eat more mixed meat-and-vegetable soup. We also eat more fruits in season.

We also tend to eat porridge made from mung beans, red beans, lotus seeds, yam, lily, and red dates. We may mix the ingredients together, depending on our personal taste.

02 Nourish the Spleen

As practitioners of life cultivation, we try to nourish the spleen in the Summer. In other words, we will eat food that will be good for our digestive system. We generally will eat the following porridge.

Spleen porridge

It is prepared with the following ingredients: ginseng, atractylodes, poria, licorice, and white rice.

Combination porridge

It is prepared with the following ingredients: ginseng 9 grams, atractylodes 9 gm, poria 9 gm, licorice 6 gm. We may prepare porridge with the addition of white rice. We may also prepare a soup with the listed ingredients. It is reputed to invigorate the spleen and nourish the stomach.

马晓山

03 Reduce Inner Moisture

As practitioners of life cultivation, we all guard against excessive moisture in our body in the Summer. The number one dish for getting rid of excessive moisture is Winter Melon Soup. It is reputed to aid in urination, get rid of excessive moisture in the body, reduce swelling, and reduce excessive heat.

The soup is prepared from winter melon (wax gourd) and Japanese yam (Shanyao). The winter melon has tough skin, and the Japanese yam has yellow skin. We are advised to keep the skin on the winter melon, but it takes longer to cook. The yellow skin of the yam has to be peeled off like potato skin.

04 Recommended food dishes

As practitioners of life cultivation, the following dishes are our favorites. Most of them will reduce inner heat for the hot Summer.

Bitter gourd dish. A stew made of minced pork and mustard gourd (bitter gourd). Reputed to dispel summer heat, reduce inner heat, cool blood and detoxify.

Turtle dish. A stew made of turtle meat and ophiopogon japonicus. Reputed to increase body fluid and blood.

Winter melon dish. A stew made of winter melon and corn. Reputed to clear and relieve summer heat, reducing high blood pressure.

Pigeon dish. A stew made of pigeon meat and codonopsis. Reputed to invigorate energy, reduce inner moisture, and lower blood pressure.

Ginkgo dish. A stew made of diced chicken meat and ginkgo fruit. Reputed to lubricate lungs, fortify kidneys, improve breathing, and reduce deficiency.

Lily dish. A stew made of sliced chicken meat and lily bulb (fresh or dried). Reputed to clear inner heat, quench thirst, help in urination, and detoxify the body.

Barley dish. A soup made of barley and winter melon. Reputed to clear inner heat, reduce inner moisture, detoxify the body, and anti-aging.

Pork belly dish. A stew made of pork belly and lily bulb(fresh or dried). It is reputed to improve immunity and may have anti-cancer properties.

Duck dish. A stew made of duck and cloves. It is reputed to increase body fluid and helps with male energy.

Sea cucumber dish. A stew made of sea cucumber, huaishan (dried Japanese yam), and goji berry. Reputed to fortify the kidneys, nourishes the blood, moistens the body, and helps with male energy.

Winter melon dish. A congee made of winter melon and white rice. Reputed to reduce inner heat, cool the blood, detoxify the body, and smooth the vital energy flow.

Gastrodia dish. A congee made of gastrodia (tianma), chrysanthemum and white rice. Reputed to reduce fear, reduce male energy, sooth the liver, and suppress the wind. It is used when we are scared or in fear or in shock.

Keys to practice the Ruding Technique

马晓山

Different dharmas or disciplines have different requirements for the practice of Ruding. In Taoism Ruding, it requires bewilderment. In Buddhism Ruding, it requires forgetting both I and outside things.

No matter what kind of requirement it is, we must first know the samadhi or technique. Whether it is Buddhism or Taoism, they are all secretive about the techniques of their form of Ruding practice. Why? The reason is that they need to find a good apprentice before they can pass on the real technique in detail to him.

If the masters casually pass on the core practice of their sect to others, it is easy to bring disaster to the sect, because people without virtue may use the skills brought by the practice to do bad things. In the past, it was said that when an apprentice caused trouble, the teacher would suffer with him. The reason is that people with bad conduct will ruin the reputation of the sect, and may even bring disaster.

However, there are no absolutes. Some people, out of great compassion for the world, will disclose the real essentials of the Ruding practice, though the action is not prevalent. This article will share with you some key points in the practice of Ruding or meditation.

High Morality

The first key to Ruding practice is high morality or virtue.

As we practice Ruding, we must first cultivate our morality or virtuousness in our daily life. It is not that we are worried that once we learned Ruding at high-level skill that we will hurt others. Rather, if we do not have high morality, we will never reach the high-level skills at all.

The Ruding technique is a form of profound Kungfu. If we do not pay attention to the cultivation of moral character, we will not be able to let ourselves enter into high-level of Ruding practice.

Many people seek to meditate but the vast majority of them do not usually pay attention to the cultivation of morality, so they will not be able to enter into the high-level form of meditation. This is a very regrettable act. When you focus on the cultivation of moral character, then you can continue.

State of Inaction

The second key to Ruding practice is the concept of Inaction.

In our practice of Ruding, we must understand the concept of Nature and Us is One. In Taoism, we believe that our body is a small universe. This small universe is part of the large universe surrounding our body. The small universe and the large universe are communicating all the time. However, due to various limitations, this small universe cannot fully communicate with the larger universe.

Taoism speaks of inaction, while Buddhism speaks of void or emptiness. Whether we call it inaction or void, it boils down to bringing our mind into a state of not thinking about anything and doing nothing. If we can be in a state of inaction for one second, then we are into Ruding for that second. When we are in the state of inaction for an hour, then we are into Ruding for that hour. Is this easy to attain?

However, this inaction is not just a requirement of our mind. At the same time, the requirement for the human body must be consistent with the mind. Why?

The human mind and the human body have always been inseparable. If we give up on one of them, we will not be able to survive on the other. Therefore, Taoism dictates that in order to train our mind, we must first train our body. There are various methods of body training in Taoism. When you look up the Mustang Shenzhan Technique, you will find many ways to train our body into superb shapes.

Buddhists do not pay attention to body training, so they talk about death. The exception is Zen Buddhism which teaches body health, but in a different way. Zen Buddhism talks about meditation and about physical body achievement. However, Zen Buddhism first talks about cultivating the mind. If you do not cultivate your mind, you will not be able to enter into the state of meditation. Therefore, among many sects of Buddhism, the vast majority of those who truly accomplish things in the flesh are Zen Buddhist.

Regardless of whether it is Taoism or Buddhism, they heavily emphasize the cultivation of virtuous character in their practice. The real reason is that the better the conduct, the less distracting thoughts exist in the thoughts of the practitioners, and they have a better chance to reach the state of inaction within the ideal state of At One with Nature.

Taoism says that “Inaction is the Great Way. ”Buddhism states that “Seeing the five aggregates as empty, abandoning all sufferings.”

As long as our body and mind are truly integrated with Nature as One, it will be very simple for us to practice samadhi or Ruding.

However, the requisite is for us to continuously develop our moral character. In the words of Buddhism, we must accumulate virtue and do good deeds and be kind to others, and not be angry at any time. In the words of Taoism, it is said that the highest goodness is like water. We are always in a state of humility and inaction.

The key to Ruding practice is the cultivation of virtue, and Ruding practice is only the beginning of life cultivation. In order to achieve really great achievements, it takes years of practice and accumulation of virtue.

Buddhism says that to become a Buddha, after receiving the prophecy of the Buddha, we still need to experience the difficulties of the three asamkhayal kalpas. In the Taoist practice, we will experience eighty-one calamities before we can achieve the state of the Great Way, a sort of Enlightenment.

It can be seen from this discourse that Perseverance is the last key element in our practice of Ruding.

Dealing with Death

马晓山

Death is inevitable. As practitioners of life cultivation, each of us has our unique way of dealing with our death.

John completed his Jingzuo exercises and thought to himself. Yes, my friend Danny will soon die.

Look at Danny. As time goes on, his mouth is crooked. His memory is fuzzy. He does not recognize people. He cannot eat. It looks as if Danny is hanging by a thread of breath. It looks like Danny will be gone the next moment.

However, days in and days out, Danny lingers on. He did not die. Not only that, he sometimes utters a word or two. He sometimes opens his eyes. He sometimes seeps a little ginseng tea.

With an aged and damaged body, nobody knows Danny is hanging on for what. It looks like he still has missions to be completed, or he is waiting for someone. He just drags on. He will not die. He will not close his eyes forever.

Danny thought to himself. Boy, I wish I could die soon. I really do not want to linger on like this. I wish I could exit with a bang rather than a fizzle. What is the point of dragging on with a damaged body that cannot support my life anymore? People who said it is better to live are wrong. I should have died on the battlefield. Death should be instant rather than in pieces.

Danny thought to himself. Fate is wonderful but bizarre. It hides among thousands of turns. I can only step out one step at a time. I don’t know what kind of outcome will be waiting for me. The only thing I can do is to continue to walk on.

There are too many unpredictable variables in life. I don’t know when the storm will come, how big the waves are, and whether I will easily lose everything I have. Those feelings that have been bitterly suppressed, those words that have been buried for many years, those foreboding emotions that have been suppressed, they have finally found a catharsis exit.

Everything in life is unpredictable, all that can be done is to cherish what we have now.

Life is like a chess game. I make a wrong move and I lose a piece of territory. I still think that it is possible for me to find victory in other places. I used to have lots of frustration and I wanted to die, but I still struggle on. For a young person, there is no need to sentence himself to lifelong death penalty for one small mistake. But for an aged person like me, should I still struggle on?

I should know that there are things in this world that I cannot change. The human mind is the most powerful shackle in this world. Once I am trapped, I cannot detach myself from it.

The human mind is such a complicated thing. No matter how many thousands of thoughts I have, in the end I can make only one choice. I may regret it in the future, but at that very moment, I usually obey my own mind.

Danny thought to himself. Would I be reborn here after I died? Then, will the dead Danny continue to live in other places? There are also other friends. After they die, will they meet each other and remember each other? Will they continue to live with some happy and comfortable days? Will they live and continue to suffer? I don’t know, I don’t want to know. People do not live just to pursue happiness. There are things that you do which will not necessarily bring you happiness, but you will definitely not be happy if you don’t do it. At the moment of choice, we go with the satisfaction of our desire.

In the journey of life, some walk alone, and some hurtle together. For people who are preserving and indomitable, they may go for power, status, wealth, and authority. The only exception is love which requires a sincere heart.

Someone said to me, love is tolerance, love is patient, love is forgiveness, love is full of hope. As long as the other person is happy, you can always stand on the other side, not close, not in line, just silently.

However, my love is selfish, desperate, fierce, full of calculations and praying for rewards, both hurting me and hurting the other. However, it infiltrated my bone marrow, inserted into my heart, accompanied by my pulse. Without death it would not stop. Is this not love?

Danny thought to himself. If I am not successful, I will just die. Danny has made a decision. Since his birth he has been faced with this problem, and he struggled for his existence endlessly. Now it looks like he has reached the end of the route. He has no hope that someone will come and rescue him. Who else can he count on for help except himself in this world of endless sufferings?

Overthinking and Mind Suffering

马晓山

Everyone thinks in his daily life. Normal thinking does not affect our health. However, deep thinking, especially thinking over unsolved problems will hurt our health. Our energy circulation will be in knots. It hurts our spleen leading to mind suffering.

How so?

Thinking starts from our spleen and ends in our heart, or mind, as you might say. Consequently, overthinking will not only hurt our mind, it will also affect our temper. Overthinking will affect blood production and blood circulation. It shows up in heart murmur, forgetfulness, insomnia, and many dreams.

Thus a mom will not sleep well when she thinks too much about how she should respond to her children’s requests.

As a consequence of overthinking, our stomach will also start to act funny, starting to malfunction. Typically we will feel that our stomach is stuffy, not feeling hungry.

Thus, overthinking is a really bad emotion or habit.

Some life cultivation practitioners think that thinking will prevent dementia and it is good for us. However, there is a difference between normal thinking and overthinking. Just do not step over the line.

How do we draw the line?

Our heart and stomach will tell us. Just listen to our body’s complaints. Stop overthinking in time. It is easy.

Dealing with Overthinking

It turned out that the beautiful eyes of Mubai not only looked tired and indifferent, but also covered with a lot of red lines.

Mubai was a healthy woman. No matter how tired she was, after a night’s rest, she should have recovered. In the normal circumstances, she should have arisen refreshed, energetic, with eyes clear and bright, and not pale as she was now.

Needless to say, Mubai didn’t sleep well last night. Instead, she must have sat up in the evening, thinking throughout the night.

What she was thinking must be extremely difficult for her to resolve. She must have spent lots of energy thinking about difficult issues.

That is the reason she aged overnight.
