As we age: retire early 02

The aging process

Immortality is an eternal topic, but no one can achieve it.

Biologically speaking, aging is a spontaneous and inevitable process of organisms over time. It is a complex natural phenomenon, manifested by structural degeneration, functional decline, and loss of adaptability and resistance.

What affects the aging process?

01 Heredity

A large number of facts have proven that human aging is closely related to heredity. Due to different genetic characteristics, the aging speed is also different.

Strong qi endowment yields long life and weak qi endowment yields early death. If the endowment qi is rich, the body will be strong, and if the body is strong, the life will be long. If the endowment qi is thin, the body will be weak, and if the body is weak, the life will be short accompanied with many illnesses.

Wang Chong: Lunheng Qi Shou Chapter

If we are endowed with rich qi at birth, we will live a long life. If we are endowed with thin qi at birth, we will live a short life and be sick often. We can tell this when a baby is born.

Strong innate endowments will lead to a strong body, high energy, and difficulty in aging. On the contrary, weak innate endowments will lead to a weak body, the body will be haggard, the spirit will be listless, and aging will be advanced or accelerated.

The parents are responsible for our innateness. We cannot pick and choose at birth. We take what is given to us.

02 Emotion

Excessive seven emotions, that is, mental stimulation or sudden severe mental trauma, exceeding the range that the human body’s physiological activities can regulate, will cause imbalance of yin and yang and qi and blood, dysfunctioning of organs and meridians, leading to the occurrence of diseases and rapid aging.

There are folk proverbs that say

Smile and you will look ten-years younger.

Folk saying

Be sorrowful and you will grow gray hair.

Folk saying

These are wise sayings from ordinary folks. We bet you can come out with more proverbs such as these to express the idea that emotions will affect health and aging.

How do you control your emotion so that it is in check and balance all the time?

Practice Mind Cultivation, as part of Life Cultivation.

03 Balance of work and rest

Loss of balance between work and rest can easily lead to rapid aging.

Taking arrogance as a common thing……so it will fade away after half a hundred years.

Huangdi Neijing: Su Wen Ancient Innocence Theory

Arrogance here refers to a life of reckless living. If we regard arrogance as a normal way of life, we will look very old when we are only fifty years old.

The so-called reckless behavior refers to a wrong lifestyle, such as imbalance in work and rest, over-exertion in sexual activities, all-plays and no work, plus social competition ( rat-race) and impact of the natural environment, and so on.

Take back control of your life. Do not let your work life control your entire life. Do not work yourself to death.

04 Organs and Spirits

In the understanding of aging, traditional herbal medicine attaches great importance to the functions of internal organs and the role of essence, energy and spirit.

01 Kidneys

The kidneys are the foundation of innateness. We are born with a certain amount of kidney essence and qi and they are genetic, beyond our control. Human growth, development and aging are closely related to the kidneys and their essence.

In Huangdi Neijing: Suwen Ancient Innocence, it discusses women’s seventy-seven and men’s eighty-eight. It uses the natural rise and fall of kidney qi to explain the relationship between the human body’s growth, development, aging process and innate endowment, thus suggesting that the key to aging lies in the rise and fall of kidney qi. For more information on this, refer to part one of this series of posts.

The kidneys are characterized by water. They store kidney essence. They are the foundation of vitality, and are the root of yin and yang biochemistry. The rise and fall of the kidney-qi affects the rise and fall of the vitality and the strength of the biochemical functions.

If the kidneys are deficient, vitality will be weak. If vitality is weak, the biochemical functions will be weak, and human aging will be accelerated.

Since you are born with the kidney-qi, can you still increase your kidney-qi, and how?

02 Stomach and spleen

The spleen and stomach are the foundation of a healthy body. It is similar to the spock of the wheel.

All water and grains enter the stomach, and all the internal organs send qi to the stomach. If the spleen and stomach are weak, food and water cannot be digested and absorbed, and the nutrients needed by the human body cannot be replenished in time, which will affect the health of the body, accelerate aging, and even lead to death.

Huangdi Neijing clearly points out that the Yangming meridian is the meridian with abundant qi and blood. Once the Yangming meridian declines, the face becomes scorched, and the hair begins to fall. These are the initial manifestations of aging.

The spleen and stomach are characterized by earth and are the hub for the rise and fall of the body’s qi. When the spleen and stomach are healthy, the yang-energy of the heart-qi and lung-qi will move downwards of our body, and the yin-energy of the liver-qi and kidney-qi will rise in our body. We refer to this situation as the harmony between Heaven and Earth. It means that our body is in perfect balance, as desired by Nature.

If the spleen and stomach are deficient, it will lead to abnormal rise and fall of the qi of the five organs. It will result in a series of pathological changes, affecting health and longevity.

How do you keep your stomach and spleen in good condition?

03 Heart

The heart contains the spirit and governs the blood.

The heart is the master of life activities, coordinating the organs and running the blood vessels. Weak heart qi will affect the circulation of blood vessels and the mental functions, thereby accelerating aging. Therefore, traditional herbal medicine health preservation will pay special attention to protecting the heart.

If the heart is clear, the lower body will be at peace. If we use this as a basis for health preservation, we will live a long life. If the heart is unclear, all the organs will be in danger.

How do you protect your heart?

04 Summary

Essence is the basis of human life activities. The activities of human limbs, nine orifices and internal organs, as well as human spiritual thinking and consciousness, are all based on essence and spiritual power.

Therefore, although there are many factors and complex manifestations of human aging, they are all inevitably accompanied by pathological changes in the essence and qi. If essence and qi are deficient, evil will come together to attack. If evil is rampant, essence will be further damaged. In this vicious cycle, disease will remain.

At the age of forty, the yin energy has been half, and daily life is declining. At the age of fifty, body weight gains, ears and eyes are not clear. At the age of sixty, yin-energy is impotent, qi is greatly weakened, nine orifices are unfavorable, lower part is weak, upper part is in excess, and tears and nose drippings come out involuntarily.

Huangdi Neijing: Suwen Yin and Yang Yingxiang Dalun

It specifically explains that due to the loss of yin essence and yang-energy, the human body will undergo a series of aging changes.
