Case study of stomach

As practitioners of life cultivation, let us study a case of stomach health. Let us look at an example of a stomach and spleen whose functions are impaired due to weakness. In addition, the patient also suffered from dry stool.

01 About spleen deficiency

What are the symptoms of spleen deficiency? How to regulate spleen deficiency?

The spleen is an important organ of our body, and its importance to our health cannot be overstressed. Many of us say that we have spleen deficiency, so what is the cause of spleen deficiency? How do we improve our spleen deficiency? What do we eat to recover from spleen deficiency?

Spleen deficiency is mostly caused by (1) improper diet, (2) overwork, and (3) prolonged illness that damages the spleen.

Physicians of all ages have conducted in-depth research on the syndrome of spleen deficiency. They pointed out that the spleen governs the movement and transformation of nutrients. It is the source of qi and blood biochemistry, and is the acquired foundation of life.

There are many reasons for us to have a weak stomach and spleen.

First, it may be hereditary and we are borned with a weak stomach and spleen and we did not take good care of it due to ignorance.

Second, we acquired the conditions for lack of proper care.

Third, our diet is not temperate.

Fourth, we do not eat regularly, so our hunger and fullness are abnormal.

Fifth, our fatigue is excessive due to overwork.

Sixth, we worry for a long period of time.

Seventh, we are naturally old and frail due to aging.

Eighth, we have a serious illness and we never recover our vitality. The lack of recuperation can lead to the deficiency of the spleen and the dysfunction of the transportation capability, resulting in insufficient qi and blood, thus forming the syndrome of deficiency of the spleen.

Experts believe that it takes at least one month for the body to improve the qi deficiency condition. In fact, no matter what type of body constitution is being adjusted, long-term persistence is needed to see any effect.

02 Spleen improvement using the dietary technique

The most important technique used to improve the spleen and stomach is the dietary technique. We should eat three meals a day regularly, with heavy emphasis on breakfast. The key is to use a variety of foods to balance our body constitution.

Congee is the best spleen-nourishing breakfast. Basically, the congee should be prepared with millet. If we want to invigorate our spleen, we add foods such as jujube and yam. If we are deficient in qi and blood, we add foods such as black sesame and peanuts. If we suffer from dampness, we add food such as barley. If we suffer from insomnia, we add food such as sorghum rice.

On a daily basis, avoid fat, sweet and thick meals. Foods that are too sweet, greasy, or salty are not conducive to the transportation and transformation function of the spleen.

It is best to eat foods that are light, digestible, and diverse. Do not overeat, best at 70% full for each meal. At meals, the food should be warm, not cold. Try to avoid food that will bring coldness to the body such as bitter gourd. However, if you have inflammation, you may want to eat bitter gourd. Thus, the key is to remember to balance your body constitution through dietary technique.

03 Spleen improvement using the tuina and other techniques

Massaging the abdomen can help regulate the spleen and stomach, and strengthen its function of transformation and transportation of nutrients.

If we have dry stools, we should rub our stomach clockwise. If we have loose stools, we should rub our stomach counterclockwise. This will help to improve our stomach.

At ordinary times, we should also pay attention to the adjustment of emotions. We should try to maintain a stable and pleasing emotion, without anger. How?

We should strike a balance between our work and rest. Do not overwork. Health should be more important than diligence. Try to take a nap in the afternoon to nourish qi and blood.

All of the above activities will help to improve our spleen deficiency. The deficiency of the spleen will have a certain impact on daily life, so when we detect symptoms of deficiency of the spleen, we must pay attention to it so as to achieve early treatment.

For people with stomach heat, the food residues descend slowly, and the water is easy to lose. When it reaches the large intestine, it becomes very dry, which leads to constipation. In contrast, the stool is often shapeless and very liquid, which is mostly caused by stomach deficiency and coldness.

02 Acupoint Massage Therapy

People with constipation can try the abdominal pushing method, that is, place one hand on the lower edge of the left lung, press the other hand on it, and massage evenly with force. This method can promote gastrointestinal peristalsis and accelerate the downward flow of food residues.

To treat spleen deficiency with diarrhea, you may apply warm moxibustion at (1) the zhongwan acupoint (located at four inches above the navel) , or (2) the zusanli acupoint (press the knee with the palm, and place the end of the middle finger outward one horizontal finger), or (3) the guanyuan acupoint (3 inches below the navel) and other acupoints.

At the same time, you may drink a decoction made of one cup of ginger, jujube and brown sugar water to alleviate the symptoms.

Pressing and kneading fifty to one hundred times a day can strengthen the spleen and stomach, adjust the middle and regulate qi, guide stagnation and collaterals, and is suitable for various types of spleen and stomach lesions.

Zusanli acupoint (four transverse fingers below the eyes of the outer knee, the edge of the tibia)

Feishu acupoint (1.5 inches from the spinous process of the third thoracic vertebra)

Pishu acupoint (1.5 inches from the spinous process of the 11th thoracic vertebra)

Shenshu acupoint (beside the spinous process of the second lumbar vertebra 1.5 inches away).
