As we age: harmony

01 The state of harmony

In traditional herbal medicine, the most important secret to keep the human body healthy is to maintain a state of harmony in the body, mind, and spirit.

In health science, this state of harmony is called homeostasis. Homeostasis is any self-regulating process by which an organism tends to maintain stability while adjusting to conditions that are best for its survival. If homeostasis is successful, life continues; if it’s unsuccessful, it results in a disaster or death of the organism.

In traditional herbal medicine, only when the body, mind, and spirit are in harmony can the human body be truly healthy. This kind of harmony is not only the harmony inside the body, but also the harmony between the body and the external environment.

In particular, it emphasizes the huge influence of emotions on human health. It is believed that when the human body gradually ages with age, the physiological ability to cope with psychological changes will weaken, and it will no longer have a strong adjustment ability like young people, so it is also easy to get sick.

Every patient encountered by a doctor has various disharmonious problems, which requires the doctor to analyze the different conditions of the patient and then help the patient to correct and adjust, and finally return to the state of harmony.

02 What is harmony

What is harmony in traditional herbal medicine? It is a long explanation.

In traditional herbal medicine, harmony consists of four words: zhong zheng ping he.
Zhong means central and not biased. Zheng means to be upright. Ping means flat, and aims to pursue stability. He means peaceful.

In summary, the four words mean a state of balanced, neutral, peaceful and harmony.
Regarding the causes of disharmony in the human body, the predecessors of traditional herbal medicine also made a systematic summary. Traditional herbal medicine believes that the main causes of human illness are divided into three types: external cause, internal cause, and non-internal and non-external cause.

The external cause includes the six qi (wind, cold, heat, dampness, dryness, fire.) The normal six qi nourish people without hurting them. The six qi, if in excess, will be transformed into causes of illnesses.

The internal cause is the seven emotions (joy, anger, worry, thought, sadness, fear, shock) together with food and fatigue.

The non-external cause is trauma, car accidents and so on.

Every doctor attaches great importance to the cause of illness of the patient. Among all the causes of the patient, the adjustment of the seven emotions is the most important.
Ye Tianshi said in his medical records:

This illness cannot be cured with medicine and food. The patient has to be happy in order to be cured.

Most of the non-internal and non-external causes are unexpected injuries, which are difficult to prevent, and only need to be treated in time.

03 Manifestations of an illness

In traditional herbal medicine, When a person is out of harmony, he gets sick. If he is adjusted well, he will naturally not get sick. Therefore, the focus of traditional herbal medicine is on the person, not on the disease.

According to Huangdi Neijing, a medical classic:

A neutral person will not get sick.

What is a neutral person? A person who is in the middle is called a neutral person.

How can a person achieve a state of harmony?

Sun Simiao, a great medical scientist in the Tang Dynasty, said in his book Thousand Gold Prescriptions:

If the moral of a person is not complete, even if he were to take the jade liquid and golden pill, he will not live long. The day his morality is perfect, his life will be prolonged without praying for longevity, blessings are attained without seeking blessings, this is the great scripture of health preservation! Only by respecting The Way and morality and accumulating goodness and virtue can he be healthy physically and mentally, and achieve both happiness and longevity.

What are the manifestations of an illness? Too much or not enough, whether it is an illness of the body or an illness of the heart, this is the case.

Lao Tzu said:

The way of heaven is to make up for what is lacking while destroying what is excess.

If there is more than enough, it is in excess. If it is insufficient, it is lacking.
According to the Way of Heaven, if you possess more, you will be damaged. If you don’t have enough, you will be compensated. This damage and compensation is to restore you to a good state through various methods, that is, you will be in a harmonious state.

04 Treating an illness

How does traditional herbal medicine treat an illness?

One is body adjustment. If something is in excess, we will relieve it. If it is insufficient, we will replenish it. We are not concerned about the illness. We merely try to restore the body to a balanced state.

The second is to adjust your mind. Once you have a peaceful mind, your qi will be in harmony. When you are not seeking excess, you will understand the goodness of nothingness. and your qi will follow with it. You will then keep the righteous spirit inside your body, and an illness will have no place to stay.

When a person’s five internal organs, seven emotions, qi and blood, and yin and yang are in harmony, he will be free from all diseases.

Nowadays, more and more people are paying attention to health preservation, and more and more older people prefer to follow the advice of traditional herbal medicine. After the age of forty, the vitality of the body will begin to weaken, and after the age of fifty, the change of vitality will be very fast.

At this age, it is not easy for us to defend against the six qi evils, and they easily invade our body to cause serious illnesses over time. Therefore, there is a saying in herbal medicine that says that there are no minor illnesses after age fifty. If we are sick, it must not be a minor illness.

Therefore, we must pay attention to illness as we age, as the vitality is weakened and the resistance is weak, it is even more necessary to prevent problems before they happen. We should understand the practice of health preservation, disease prevention and treatment of chronic illnesses. We should not be sloppy in taking care of our body health.

05 A case of high moral

For four years, Lauren Sánchez has been quietly working to help Amazon founder and her now fiancé, Jeff Bezos, strategically give away his vast wealth to a variety of causes.

Their involvement in their philanthropic projects helps their relationship in more than one way.

01 Giving back

Sánchez, 53, a former journalist who was born in Albuquerque, New Mexico, cites her humble beginnings as her motivation for giving back. In her giving back to society, she achieves the high ground of morality, and thus satisfaction, and thus happiness.

Not only that, she chose the people who have the same ideals to support, so their voices can be heard many times over. Thus her good deeds will have greater influence in this world.

Sánchez and Bezos said they wanted to bring a “little bit of light” to the people who use unity instead of conflict to resolve issues. “We wanted to amplify their voices because the voices that are really negative seem to get amplified in this world,” she said.

02 Mutual admiration

Both Lauren and Jeff have the same objectives in life. Thus they work together like yin and yang in great harmony. That way, they both achieve health and happiness because of the harmony.

As for what makes their relationship work?

As Bezos said:

“It’s easy. We bring each other energy, we respect each other. So, it’s fun to work together.”

This is a good example of good harmony. With harmony, you can bet that they will be healthy and happy.
