Origins of illness Part Three

People in ancient times who knew The Way will model the Yin and Yang, harmonize in calculation, eat in moderation, live a regulated life, equalize work and play, thus the body and mind co-exists in harmony, who will live to be one hundred years old and then die.

The first principle on longevity is to model our life according to the Universe.

On the origin of diseases, Suwen section of Neijing states that:

All diseases are born from wind, cold, heat, dampness, dryness and fire. They are transformed with changes.

In plain English, it says that human diseases originate from changes in wind, cold, heat, dampness, dryness, and fire which are elements in our environment. That is, diseases come from Nature or the change in Nature. This is in great contrast with the Western medical idea that diseases originate from bacteria and viruses and so on, thus the prevalent use of antibiotics.

Once, we told a young girl to come in from the cold, otherwise, she would catch a cold. She rolled her eyes and said cold did not come from the cold wind, but is a form of virus.

However, herbal medicine believes that diseases can come from wind, cold, heat, dampness, dryness and fire. Natural conditions and natural changes determine the occurrence of diseases. This is the holistic view of yin and yang that we started talking about.

On the origin of diseases, Linjiu Section of Neijing states that:

Those born of all kinds of diseases are compared to dryness, cold and heat, wind and rain, yin and yang, emotions, diet, and dwelling.

On the origin of diseases, Pain Chapter of Suwen Section of Neijing states that:

All diseases arise from qi.

Qi is a form of vital energy and it is actually a manifestation of emotion. Anger causes the qi to rise. Joy causes the qi to slow down. Sadness causes the qi to disappear. Fear causes the qi to go down. Cold causes the qi to withdraw. Heat causes the qi to vent. Fear causes the qi to be chaotic. Physical labor exhausts the qi. Thinking causes the qi to stagnate.

Diseases Originate from wind, cold, heat, dampness, dryness and fire

It is the outside climate that causes disease. In the past, the elements known as wind, cold, heat, dampness, dryness and fire were purely natural, but now times have changed. In addition to the natural wind, there are fans. In addition to the natural cold, there are air conditioners. The element dampness may also have current methods of production, such as fire can be produced by heating and so on. So now there are not only natural factors but also man-made factors, which are also a part of the impact on health that cannot be ignored. Many diseases are now slowly produced in the air-conditioned environment.

Why does Nature provide us with hot weather in Summer?

First of all, we eat and drink to extract nutrients from our foods to survive. Our environment is not guaranteed to be ideal at all times, so we may ingest foods that cause yin or coldness to build up in our body. In order to balance it, we will need to produce yang or heat to dispel the coldness. How do we do it? The power of heaven and earth, summer, that is.

When summer comes, the weather is very hot, and naturally our sweat pores are opened. Even though we are advised not to overwork in the summer, we still must work, so that we will sweat. After sweating, the medullary tract of our body is opened, and many hidden toxins including yin and dampness are eliminated from our body. Thus our body has a mechanism of adjusting itself so that it is properly balanced. Thus, we should follow Nature in the summer by welcoming the heat in the summer.

We hate the sun in the three hot months in the summer because of the heat. However, Neijing advised us not to hate the sun in the summer. If we follow the advice, we will be fine. If we ignore the advice, we are courting disaster. Therefore, do not confine yourself to an air-conditioned room twenty four hours a day, especially with a very low temperature.

Why is that so?

As we said before, we need to dispel the coldness from our body when it accumulates. Heating and sweating is a great way to do it. We will let the yang-energy to dispel the yin-energy from our body. If we lock ourselves in an air-conditioned room, we are reversing the natural process. Many diseases will follow if we do it all summer and every summer following it. We will have joint pains before we know it. We will have cold feet in the winter and we complain about it without knowing why. Now you know why but we bet you will continue to use your air-conditioners because you like instant gratification. Right?

Therefore, the elements called wind, cold, heat, dampness, dryness and fire should not be underestimated. It is the source of many diseases, and the external environment will affect our health.
