In the Face of Death III

We, as practitioners of life cultivation, are mostly retired and senior persons. Compared to younger people, death is more imminent for us. We tend to read about how other people of our age will face death. Here is a widely-circulated story about how Professor Chen faced her last days in life. The following article is part three of an excerpt on what she had written before her death.

02 Money

For many elderly people, the older they are, the more they hold tight to their money. To me, they really did not understand the true value of money.

My retirement pension is several thousand yuan a month, and I cannot spend all of it. When the children come to see me, I will treat them out of my own pocket. On the 60th birthday of my children, I gave each of them 10,000 yuan.

I think that I only have several hundred thousand yuan in the bank. When I die, my children will inherit it, and they will take it for granted and will not be thankful to me.

Therefore, why don’t we take it out now to share with everyone, so that everyone will be happy and be thankful? Ha ha!

03 Let go

Nowadays, many elderly people focus only on themselves and blame everyone else for their problems. They always think that everyone else does them wrong. They think the leader mistreats them. They think the colleagues mistreat them. They complain that the children do not take good care of them. They complain that the daughter-in-law owes them. Then they end up being unhappy everyday.

Why is this situation necessary? If you want to be happy, you must let go of yourself and think differently.

You think that you have brought up your children so they should repay you by taking care of you. However, your children also have their own children, so how can you expect them to have time to always be by your side?

You should think back to the time when your own parents were alive. How many times did you spend time with them? How much did you take care of them?

I never ask my children to be on my side. I live a very regular life by myself, and to be honest, I am a little too disgusted that they have disrupted my plans when they come.

Living alone should be the norm, then it is a nice surprise for children to come to see you. This way, you won’t feel dissatisfied and often feel lonely.

Do not ask someone to repay you. You should just give.

I raised my children and grandchildren and they are my responsibility. I do not ask my children and grandchildren to reward me and pay me back for what I have done for them.

I have always enjoyed helping others, and if I can help others, I am happy. If I can bring happiness to the people around me, I feel happy.

Once a teacher was in financial difficulties. I gave her some money and she thanked me. I said, don’t thank me, I am happy to do it.

Our relationship with other people should be sincere, but not too involved.

An old lady’s husband in our courtyard passed away. For a long time, she was unable to let go and was always sad. Love is deep and that is understandable, but you cannot wash your face with tears all day.

The same goes for my children. I love them and of course I cannot bear to part with them. But since separation is inevitable, I do not want them to be burdened by grief in the future, so I do not want to be too entangled with them now. I do not want them to run to me trying to take care of me all day long.

As for the grandchildren, haha, needless to say, they have long forgotten about me. This is the natural law of human metabolism and I am not sad by it.

In short, only by letting go of ego can we overcome death and fully enjoy life. As for what happened after my death, my children and grandchildren would have their own blessings, which is not something I should bother to think about.
