In the face of death II

马晓山

We, as practitioners of life cultivation, are mostly retired and senior persons. Compared to younger people, death is more imminent for us. We tend to read about how other people of our age will face death. Here is a widely-circulated story about how Professor Chen faced her last days in life. The following article is part two of an excerpt on what she had written before her death.

02 Second goal: Die faster

It is necessary to strive to go faster in the final stage of life, not only to reduce one’s own pain, but also to avoid burdening others as much as possible.

Everyone wants to go faster in their old age, but life and death have their own timings. How can we mere mortals control it?

In my opinion, if you want to go faster, you must first be mentally prepared for going. Let me tell you my experience:

01 Not be afraid of death

In fact, no matter how old you are, you will be afraid of death. Death is always scary. You will be afraid of pain before death, and you will be afraid of heartbreak when you say goodbye to your loved ones.

Who is not afraid? But what’s the use of being afraid?

Since I was seventy years old, I have thought that it is rare to live to seventy years old, not to mention that there are many accidental factors. There are no separate fates for elders and children on the Way to Death. They are all the same.

Therefore, live a day and earn a day. Human life is divided into quantity and quality. I don’t care about quantity, I care about quality. As long as there is quality in everyday life, when you go, let it flow.

If you do not want to be afraid of death, you must have your own independent spiritual world, then you can transcend death and enjoy life. If you solve this problem well, you will live a comfortable and happy life. If the solution is not good, you will be anxious all the time.

I live happily now. A lot of knowledge has not been learned. I am never lonely. I don’t like chatting with the old ladies in the neighborhood about parental matters. I think it is better to watch TV and get a lot of new knowledge. I love watching football, tennis, and billiards. I am a fan of Ding Junhui. I also pay attention to some international news. In this way, I feel very comfortable and can withstand any disease.

The year before last, I had blood in my urine, and an examination in The Third Hospital found that there was a tumor on my left kidney, which might be cancer. The doctors and family members all advocated surgical resection.

I disagreed. I said I was 92 years old. It is not necessarily because of this tumor that I will die. Even for this reason, other diseases will appear after the operation. Then what?

I thought, what does cancer like? It likes acidic things and dislikes alkaline things. Then I decided that I would not eat acidic fish and meat, so as to starve the cancer to death! And I would eat more fruits and vegetables. I also eat cancer-fighting foods such as mushrooms, broccoli, etc. Then I have not felt any pain for two years.

Now I just don’t check it out, and it doesn’t matter if it’s bigger or smaller, whatever loves it. I have been peaceful with cancer for two years. Now I have neither painful feeling nor mental burden, and I live a full and high-quality life every day.

Anything can be overcome if you think about it. Of course, if cancer really occurs in the future, it will be very painful in the later stage, so I will leave a sum of money for painkillers. I told my daughter that in the future I won’t need to beat cancer if I’m in a coma.

Chinese people are not afraid of death, so what are they afraid of?

Only by reaching a certain level of spirituality can one transcend life and death. Once we transcend life and death, we can let go of life and death and enjoy the limited life easily. I live alone now, and my children say I should hire a nanny to accompany me. Otherwise, no one would know if I fell ill.

I said what if I was ill, the nanny could not do anything beyond getting me to the hospital for rescue.

So what if I was rescued at the hospital, I would just drag on with my life. When a person’s lifespan is up, he should let nature take its course. Why should he be rescued when he falls ill? When the body is exhausted, it ends without a problem, let it go, this is a blessing, don’t you think?

The ancients said, “people are not afraid of death, then why do you try to scare them with death?”

When you are old, if you are not afraid of death, you will live easily and your quality of life will be high. It is with this mentality that I live day by day. Facts have proved that the more you are not afraid of death, the more you will not die. I am now 94 years old, and the average life expectancy in China is 72 years old. Haha, I feel like I’ve earned too much!
